A career dedicated to justice. Michael Katz is the only candidate for Manhattan's Civil Court seat who has
devoted his entire career to making courts work-- and work better. In fact, he began his legal career in the Civil Court itself,
as the Principal Court Attorney-- a judge's chief legal advisor-- to a sitting Civil Court Judge. Now the Principal Court
Attorney to a NYS Supreme Court Justice, he's served on the Supreme Court's Anti-Bias Committee for five years,
as a member of the Law Secretaries and Law Assistants Collegium, and even found time to serve as a volunteer Arbitrator
in the Small Claims Court from 1998 to 2006.
Working to improve the legal profession. Michael Katz is a leader within the legal community,
serving on The Association of The Bar of The City of New York's Committee on Minorities in the Court, the Tort
Litigation Committee (chairing it for the past year) and its Court Procedures Subcommittee. He's been an active member of
the Jewish Lawyers Guild since 1993 (where he's past President and now Chair), and was a founder of the Mentor
Committee at his law school's Alumni Association (he's on their Board, too!).
The best Democrat for Civil Court. Michael Katz could have chosen any career path. He chose
public service-- serving the public. As a court professional handling some of the busiest dockets, he's distinguished himself.
He'll know how to run a courtroom from the moment he's sworn in.
Known as "the people's court" long before the daytime TV show, Civil Court is the entry-level court in New York's
judicial system. It handles commercial and civil disputes, many landlord-tenant matters and cases brought in the Small
Claims Court. Civil Court Judges are often elevated to Supreme Court Justice-- the next level of trial court-- so who
voters pick for Civil Court matters, because it affects the efficiency and tone of many courtrooms for decades to come.
We're in luck-- Michael Katz can be our next Civil Court Judge.
A graduate of Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, J.D., 1992, Michael was selected as a legal intern with Bet Tzedek
Legal Services in his first year, where he represented senior citizens who were wrongfully denied government benefits.
In his second summer and third year, he was a Student Advocate with NY Lawyers for the Public Interest, advocating
on behalf of persons with physical and mental disabilities who had been subject to discrimination in housing and employment.
Michael graduated Brandeis University, earning a B.A. in Psychology and Legal Studies in 1989, and was awarded the
Louis D. Brandeis Essay Prize for a study of the Massachusetts Probation System. As an undergraduate, he coordinated
100 Brandeis students in the Waltham, MA Big Brother/Big Sister program-- earning the City of Waltham's Service Award.
Michael's community roots date back to his days attending The Ramaz School on the Upper East Side. He now lives in
that neighborhood, where he volunteers at the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter. He served on the Volunteer Advisory
Board of Dorot (an agency providing social services to seniors) on the West Side from 1993-1996; he also worked for Dorot
for three summers in college. Michael and his wife Meredith, an educator and doctoral candidate at Columbia in Social
Studies Education, have two children, Esther (a second grader at Ramaz!) and Raphael, age two.
In the Democratic Primary September 9, vote Michael Katz for Civil Court Judge. He's rated "Most Highly Qualified" by the
Democratic Independent Judicial Screening Panel and endorsed by the widest range of Democratic organizations and elected officials.
